It’s been nearly a decade since Mad Max: Fury Road reignited the franchise, but fans holding out hope for a fifth film, there’s a flicker of good news. Tom Hardy, who last played the rugged road warrior in 2015, recently confirmed that Mad Max: The Wasteland is still a topic of conversation behind the scenes.
“There are always talks, but that doesn’t mean that things manifested,” Hardy told The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his latest project. “Now there’s Mad Max: The Wasteland (laughs). There are lots of things that are discussed, but they haven’t happened yet.” It’s not a greenlight, but it’s far from a dead end.

Director George Miller has long been vocal about his desire to revisit Max’s dusty world. Speaking previously, he said, “I don’t want to jinx it, but it’s the story we call ‘Max in the Wasteland,’ and it looks at what forges him as a character.” His vision for this prequel would chronicle the year leading up to the explosive events of Fury Road. Less a high-speed chase, more a character deep dive—with Miller promising, “It’s quite a different kettle of fish than, say, Furiosa.”
Furiosa was released in 2024, followed a younger version of Imperator Furiosa but struggled to match its predecessor’s box office. Despite critical praise, its lukewarm financial reception cast doubt on whether the series had enough fuel left to continue. Still, Miller seems determined to steer this saga to its next chapter.

What The Wasteland does have going for it is Tom Hardy’s continued interest. The shorter timeline between films makes his return feasible, sidestepping the recasting challenge that Furiosa faced. If the stars align, Hardy could still suit up for another ride through the wasteland.
Until then, fans will have to be content with rumors, re-watches, and Hardy’s cryptic updates. But in the world of Mad Max, nothing ever really stays buried in the sand.
