Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning epic Oppenheimer has officially landed on Netflix in the UK, giving British audiences the chance to stream one of the most talked-about films of the decade from the comfort of home.
The film chronicles the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man behind the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus, Nolan’s screenplay weaves together Oppenheimer’s scientific triumphs, personal struggles, and political downfall, culminating in a haunting reflection on the consequences of power.

Cillian Murphy leads the cast with a mesmerizing performance as Oppenheimer, earning him the Academy Award for Best Actor. He’s joined by Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, and Robert Downey Jr. in a career-defining and Oscar winning role as Lewis Strauss. The ensemble also features Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, and Benny Safdie, each adding depth to the film’s sprawling historical canvas.
Visually, Oppenheimer is a masterclass in cinematic craftsmanship. Shot in IMAX 65mm and even pioneering IMAX black-and-white photography, the film immerses viewers in both the grandeur of scientific discovery and the intimacy of moral reckoning. Ludwig Göransson’s score and Hoyte van Hoytema’s cinematography elevate the tension and emotion throughout its three-hour runtime.

At the box office, Oppenheimer shattered expectations. It grossed over $975 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing biopic and second-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Its release alongside Barbie sparked the viral “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, driving audiences to experience both films as a double feature and fueling its cultural impact.
The film went on to win seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, and Best Supporting Actor for Downey Jr., cementing its legacy as one of the most successful and critically acclaimed films in recent history.
While UK viewers can now stream Oppenheimer on Netflix, audiences in the United States can catch it on Peacock, where it continues to draw new viewers into its explosive story.
