Suranne Jones is A Prime Minister Under Siege in Netflix’s ‘Hostage’

Power plays and high stakes in Netflix’s ‘Hostage’

State visits are meant to be ceremonial. For the leaders at the heart of Hostage, they’re anything but. Netflix’s new thriller, launching August 21, throws two heads of state into the chaos of a carefully orchestrated international crisis. One’s family is under threat. The other’s presidency hangs in the balance. And neither can afford to blink.

Front and center is Suranne Jones, taking on the role of a British prime minister forced to navigate a political nightmare when her husband is abducted. Standing opposite her is a visiting French president caught in a blackmail plot. Their uneasy alliance—and potential rivalry—sets the tone for a gripping political drama. “They have weaponized my family,” Jones’ character declares in the teaser. “I will not be threatened. I will not negotiate. My loyalties are to this country. I will not allow it to be held to ransom.”

Behind the scenes, the show is driven by Matt Charman, writer of Bridge of Spies and Treason. He brings an air of tense realism to the story’s ticking-clock narrative. Speaking to Tadum, Charman said, “I’ve been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she’s done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away.” He adds, “An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she’s fierce, ruthless, and you can’t take your eyes off of her.”

Jones, who also serves as executive producer, was equally drawn to the project. “I’m thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of,” she told Netflix’s Tudum. “Hostage was perfect — me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.”
