Prime Video has locked in September 10 for the arrival of its next psychological thrill ride, The Girlfriend, and sweetened the date drop with a slick teaser and a clutch of glossy stills. The six‑part drama pairs Oscar‑nominated Robin Wright with rising force Olivia Cooke, setting up a collision course of power, paranoia and polished dinner‑party smiles.
Adapted from Michelle Frances’s best‑selling novel, the series centres on Laura, a seasoned TV executive who appears to have life neatly filed away. Everything shudders off its rails when her adored son Daniel introduces Cherry, the new girlfriend who instantly rewires the family dynamic. Laura senses hidden motives; Cherry flashes innocent charm. The thriller milks that ambiguity, daring the audience to pick a side.

Wright channels Laura’s razor‑sharp poise, while Cooke layers Cherry with equal parts sweetness and steel. Their on‑screen tug‑of‑war is the engine of the plot, and every raised eyebrow feels like a loaded weapon. Chemistry crackles; distrust sizzles. Scenes swing from velvet‑sofa intimacy to knife‑edge suspense in a heartbeat, leaving no breathing room between twists.
The ensemble is stacked: Laurie Davidson steps in as Daniel, Waleed Zuaiter portrays his father Howard, and Tayna Moodie lends gravitas as family confidante Isabella. Shalom Brune‑Franklin, Leo Suter and Francesca Corney round out a roster that promises fireworks in every direction.

Behind the camera, The Girlfriend unites Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios. Jonathan Cavendish and Caroline Norris produce, with Wright doubling as executive producer alongside Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, John Zois, Dave Clarke, Gabbie Asher and Michelle Frances. Screenwriter Naomi Sheldon steers the adaptation team, joined by a writers’ room that includes Polly Cavendish, Helen Kingston, Marek Horn, Ava Wong Davies, Isis Davis, Smita Bhide and Matt Evans.
All six episodes drop in one binge‑friendly bundle on 10 September, streaming to more than 240 territories. Prime even planted the mid‑summer announcement to stake out the autumn conversation. Cancel that weekend getaway; you’ll be too busy side‑eyeing everyone on your sofa.
