The Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps expanding, and with it, the possibilities for fan-favorite characters like Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. For years, Marvel’s film rights were scattered across different studios, which limited how many top-tier heroes could join the MCU. But now that Marvel Studios has nearly all its big names under one roof, the door is open for fresh storylines and new team-ups.
Last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine marked the first major step in bringing these characters closer to the MCU fold, even if they’re technically still in their own corner of the multiverse. The film ended on a playful note, teasing a future meeting between Deadpool and Thor, complete with a joke about Deadpool dying in Thor’s arms. With such high-profile characters and an expanding roster, many are expecting to see both Deadpool and Wolverine in the upcoming Avengers films.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke to ComicBook during a recent roundtable about the future of these characters. When asked if Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman would continue their roles, Feige confirmed, “There have absolutely been discussions. We’re in touch with Ryan a lot. So the answer is yes.” About Jackman, Feige joked, “He’s doing it until he’s 90, man.”
What’s still unclear is exactly when or where these characters will next appear. Marvel is currently planning its post-Secret Wars saga, which could mean Deadpool and Wolverine show up after the next two Avengers installments. Ryan Reynolds is reportedly working on a script for a new project described as an “X-Men ensemble movie” though not necessarily an X-Men movie in the traditional sense. Reports suggest it might be X-Force or even a fourth Deadpool film with a larger cast, but Reynolds hasn’t formally pitched the idea to Feige yet.

While Marvel is tight-lipped about the specifics, the ongoing talks signal a willingness to blend the irreverent humor of Deadpool with the storied legacy of Wolverine within the MCU’s larger narrative. This could mean more than just cameo appearances or one-off team-ups, there’s potential for these characters to drive their own unique story arcs that complement the franchise’s broader ambitions. As Marvel charts its next moves, fans can expect the Merc with a Mouth and the iconic mutant to remain key players in reshaping the future of the superhero universe.
So fans can rest easy knowing both Reynolds and Jackman will return in some capacity, even if Marvel eventually decides to recast Wolverine for future solo X-Men films. For now, Jackman’s presence in the role keeps options open and the character’s legacy intact.
