Netflix is diving into the heart of political peril with Hostage, a taut new limited series premiering August 21. The thriller centers on a state visit gone catastrophically wrong, where diplomacy turns deadly and personal stakes reach a boiling point.
Suranne Jones leads the cast as Abigail Dalton, the sitting British Prime Minister, whose life is thrown into disarray when her husband is kidnapped on the eve of a pivotal international summit. What follows is a collision of national duty and private desperation as Dalton is forced to choose between the personal and the political, while the world watches every move.

Julie Delpy co-stars as French President Vivienne Toussaint, whose own vulnerabilities are exploited in a simultaneous blackmail attempt. The two leaders, driven by conflicting agendas and mounting pressure, find themselves reluctantly aligned in a global game of brinkmanship. The backdrop is international diplomacy, but the core of the story is devastatingly personal.
The trailer for Hostage wastes no time establishing the emotional stakes. It opens with a quiet but foreboding moment between Prime Minister Abigail Dalton and her husband, Alex. “If it ever comes down to a choice, you’ll make the right one,” Alex (Ashley Thomas) tells her, a line that carries far more weight than either of them could expect.

The show blends a sharp political edge with intimate character drama, supported by a global ensemble cast that includes Corey Mylchreest, Lucian Msamati, and Jehnny Beth. Jones, who also executive produces, described the project as “something I’m really proud of” in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum.
With a leader under siege, a presidency in crisis, and the terrifying weaponization of family ties. It’s a mix of espionage, emotional tension, and moral conflict, Hostage aims to keep viewers locked in from the opening minute.
Hostage arrives on Netflix August 21. In a world where loyalty is tested and power is never absolute, the line between public office and personal cost has never looked thinner. You can watch the trailer below.
