It’s been nearly two decades since Spike Lee and Denzel Washington last shared cinematic turf. Their 2006 hit Inside Man proved they could spin crowd-pleasing suspense into box-office gold. Now, the powerhouse duo reunites for Highest 2 Lowest, and this time, they’re going in hard with a razor-sharp ransom thriller.
The trailer kicks off with a bang and Denzel doesn’t ease you in. “Wake up y’all, the king is here,” he declares. That’s not a metaphor. He’s playing David King, a music industry giant whose world tilts off its axis when his son is kidnapped. What follows is a high-stakes standoff that looks every bit as slick as it is dangerous.

Highest 2 Lowest draws inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, itself based on Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, swapping corporate boardrooms for the chaotic, beat-thumping world of hip-hop empire-building. But don’t expect a scene-for-scene remake. This isn’t just a modernization; it’s a recalibration.
Spike Lee, working from a script by Alan Fox, builds a tense and layered world where status, power, and desperation collide. The supporting cast is stacked: Jeffrey Wright, Wendell Pierce, Dean Winters and yes, A$AP Rocky makes an appearance both on-screen and on the soundtrack. Ice Spice joins the cast too, further amplifying the film’s contemporary pulse.

Premiering earlier this year at Cannes, Highest 2 Lowest landed with buzz and solid early praise. Spike’s always been at home in genre with teeth, and this one’s got bite.
The film opens in U.S. cinemas on August 15 before dropping globally on Apple TV+ on September 5. Whether it lands on the big screen in the UK remains to be seen, but this is a film made for a dark room and booming speakers. You can check out the trailer below.
