Box Office: Horror-Thriller ‘Weapons’ Opens to an Impressive $70M Worldwide

‘Weapons’ beats expectations!

Warner Bros. is off to a strong start with Weapons, blasting its way to the top spot over the weekend. The thriller opened to an impressive $42.5 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $70 million. It’s a launch that easily outpaces early tracking, suggesting the studio’s gamble on an edgy premise and sharp marketing has paid off.

In second place, Disney’s Freakier Friday kicked off its own run with $29 million in the US and $44.5 million globally. The body-swap comedy, led by Lindsay Lohan & Jamie Lee Curtis, marks another win for the studio’s family-friendly slate. While not quite hitting Weapons’ numbers, its strong Saturday bump hints at word-of-mouth potential for the coming weeks.

Third place belongs to another Disney title — The Fantastic Four: First Steps — which pulled in $15.5 million in its third weekend. That brings its global total to a mighty $434.2 million. The Marvel entry has slowed from its blistering start but remains one of the year’s top earners, holding steady in overseas markets and showing solid staying power despite competition from two fresh releases.

Universal’s The Bad Guys 2 landed in fourth in its second weekend, adding $10.4 million domestically for a global haul of $83.9 million. The animated sequel continues to perform well with younger audiences, although its drop from last weekend suggests it may be feeling the squeeze from Disney’s Freakier Friday.

Rounding out the top five is Paramount’s The Naked Gun, still finding laughs in its second week. The revival comedy scored $8.375 million in the US and has now reached $56.4 million worldwide. It’s a decent hold for a slapstick-heavy title in an otherwise effects-driven summer.

With two new debuts taking the top spots, August is off to a lively start at the box office. Whether Weapons can hold its lead or will face a challenge from next week’s high-profile releases is the real question — but for now, Warner Bros. is enjoying the view from number one.
