Relay, the latest feature from filmmaker David Mackenzie, opens in U.S. theaters today. After nearly a decade since Hell or High Water, Mackenzie returns with a sharp, corporate thriller that trades dusty landscapes for the shadowy corridors of global business and secrets too dangerous to stay hidden.
Front and center is Riz Ahmed as Tom, a highly skilled “fixer” whose job is to clean up scandals before they ever reach the public eye. Efficient, calculated, and unflinching, Tom lives by rules designed to keep him safe and one step ahead. That system falters when he encounters Sarah, a whistleblower played by Lily James, who threatens to dismantle the machine with both her knowledge and her conviction.

The tension between Tom and Sarah forms the spine of the film. Ahmed brings an icy precision to the role, while James infuses Sarah with a sharp moral compass. Their push-and-pull is less about who’s right and wrong, and more about how much either is willing to risk.
Shot on the streets of New York, the film leans into its urban grit. From glass-and-steel skyscrapers to frantic meetings in neon-lit diners, the setting reflects the constant hum of a city where power changes hands in an instant. Every corner feels like it hides a deal, a betrayal, or both.

Ahmed and James are supported by Sam Worthington and Stephen Dillane, rounding out a cast that adds further layers of menace and ambiguity. While details of the larger conspiracy remain mostly under wraps, early glimpses suggest a thriller where trust is in short supply, and survival means knowing when to cut ties.
With Mackenzie directing and Bleecker Street handling U.S. distribution, Relay promises a taut ride anchored in performance and atmosphere. It’s a world of leaks, cover-ups, and dangerous bargains — and now it’s hitting the big screen. For American audiences, the wait ends today; for U.K. viewers, the countdown runs until a Halloween release, October 31.
