Alex Garland is stepping into the Lands Between. A24 has confirmed that the filmmaker will write and direct a live-action adaptation of Elden Ring, partnering with Bandai Namco Entertainment on the project. The announcement puts to rest weeks of speculation and adds another ambitious title to Garland’s resume.
The film marks the latest collaboration between A24 and Garland, following his recent war thriller Warfare, which he co-directed with Ray Mendoza. That film has brought in over $32 million at the box office since its release. Garland’s long-time collaborators Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA Films are producing, joined by Peter Rice. Also on board are Elden Ring story co-creator George R. R. Martin and his producing partner Vince Gerardis.

Elden Ring launched in February 2022 to overwhelming praise and commercial success. The game, developed by FromSoftware under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, blends open-world exploration with punishing action gameplay. Its narrative world, shaped by Martin, delivers a sprawling dark fantasy full of cryptic lore and towering monsters. With more than 30 million copies sold, the title is one of the most celebrated games of the decade.
The upcoming spin-off game Elden Ring: Nightreign is due out May 30, but the film will likely explore new ground within the same mythos.

Garland’s directing career began with Ex Machina in 2014 and has since included Annihilation, Men, Civil War, and Warfare with all but one distributed by A24. He’s also actively writing and producing the 28 Years Later trilogy, a follow-up to 28 Days Later, with the first film directed by Danny Boyle scheduled for a June 2025 release.
The partnership between Garland and DNA stretches back to 2002. It’s a long-running creative alliance now expanding into the realm of high fantasy. With Elden Ring, Garland trades dystopian futures for shattered kingdoms—and players everywhere are watching closely.
