Mercy arrives on Amazon Prime Video today, bringing a fast-paced, near-future crime story led by Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov and written by Marco van Belle, the film drops viewers into a justice system where human judgment has been replaced entirely by artificial intelligence. No jury. Set in Los Angeles in 2029, the story centres on a legal system powered by an AI platform known as Mercy. Every defendant is given a tightly controlled 90-minute window to argue their case before a digital judge. The process is clinical and relentless, designed to eliminate ambiguity. It’s efficient. It’s absolute. And it leaves no room to hide.
Pratt plays Detective Chris Raven, an LAPD officer whose career has been tied closely to the rollout of the Mercy system. He’s credited with securing its first major conviction, helping establish trust in the technology. But that credibility is shattered when he wakes up inside the system he helped validate, hungover, restrained, and accused of murdering his wife. He has no recollection of the alleged crime, and the clock is already ticking.
Opposite him is Judge Maddox, the AI arbiter brought to life by Ferguson as a holographic presence. Maddox is composed and analytical, focused entirely on evidence and logic. At times, the system flickers, brief visual glitches that hint at instability beneath the surface. Still, the rules remain fixed. Raven must build his defense using recorded footage, digital archives, and fragments of communication, all while confined within the courtroom environment.
The film unfolds in real time, turning the investigation into a race against an unforgiving deadline. Raven is forced to reconstruct events, challenge assumptions, and confront gaps in his own memory. The structure keeps the tension constant. There’s no pause button here.
At its core, Mercy raises a single pointed idea: “Human or AI – we all make mistakes.” It’s a line that underscores the film’s central conflict, where precision meets uncertainty, and where even the most advanced systems may not be immune to error.
