After a brief but buzzy stop in AMC Theatres earlier this month, Eminem’s documentary Stans is about to land where most fans will see it, streaming. The Steven Leckart–directed feature, produced by Marshall Mathers himself, will premiere on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada, on August 26. Viewers in the UK will get it a day later.
The release comes in the same year that “Stan” — the song that redefined the term “superfan” — celebrates its 25th anniversary. Originally featured on The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000, the track quickly became one of Eminem’s signature works, blending dark storytelling with mainstream appeal. In 2017, the Oxford English Dictionary even made “stan” an official entry, a nod to its cultural staying power.

Leckart’s film doesn’t just revisit the music; it zeroes in on the people who took it to heart. Following a group of real-life Eminem devotees, Stans explores the often intense connection between artist and audience. According to the official logline, it “examines the complicated relationship between one of the world’s most private artists and his massive public persona,” combining stylized recreations, rare archival footage, and candid interviews.
For Leckart, the song’s unique point of view became the creative anchor. Speaking to press, he explained: “’Stan’ is one of the most unconventional songs ever written, where the story is mostly told from a fan’s perspective, so this film was an incredible opportunity to find a unique approach.”

The documentary doesn’t shy away from the contradictions of fandom. While many of the featured fans express a deep identification with Eminem’s lyrics, the film also shows how those connections can shift, complicate, and sometimes blur the lines between admiration and obsession.
As Leckart put it, “We kept coming back to one lyric from the song: ‘I’m just like you.’ Fans who echo that same sentiment carry much of the film. But like the song, Marshall’s perspective was also essential to the movie. I’m grateful for just how candid, sincere, and frequently hilarious he was.”
Stans streams globally on Paramount+ starting August 26 (with regional rollout dates as noted). Whether you’re a lifelong devotee or just curious about the culture behind the word, it’s a front-row seat to one of music’s most fascinating artist–fan dynamics. You can watch the trailer below.
