The fall festival season is on its way, and one of the first trailers to draw buzz is for Good Fortune, the feature film debut of Aziz Ansari as a writer-director. Set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before a theatrical release on October 17 via Lionsgate, the film brings together a great cast including Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh.
The trailer introduces Reeves in a role unlike anything audiences have seen from him before, a slightly burnt-out guardian angel named Gabriel, assigned to help a down-on-his-luck delivery worker named Arj, played by Ansari. Gabriel’s track record isn’t exactly divine: “I usually stop people from texting and driving,”

Arj, clearly unimpressed with his heavenly guide, quips back: “Great. I got stuck with a budget angel.” The film follows Arj as he crosses paths with tech billionaire Jeff (Seth Rogen), triggering a Freaky Friday-style body swap orchestrated by Gabriel to teach each man a lesson about wealth, identity, and what really matters. Predictably, the switch doesn’t go to plan, Arj embraces luxury, while Jeff decides to prove he can thrive with nothing.
This marks Ansari’s first feature after his planned debut, Being Mortal, was shelved in 2022 following a complaint about on-set behavior involving co-star Bill Murray. That film had also starred Rogen and Palmer. Ansari regrouped and focused on Good Fortune, though production was later delayed due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Filming finally began in early 2024.

With TIFF as its launchpad, Good Fortune arrives with plenty of potential and a sense of humor about its own heavenly absurdities. Between Reeves deadpan delivery, and Ansari’s comedic direction, the trailer hints at a comedy that leans into the ridiculous while aiming for something more thoughtful underneath.
The film opens in theaters on October 17, giving audiences a chance to see what happens when divine intervention comes with a slightly broken halo. You can watch the trailer below.
