Keanu Reeves is coming back as John Wick, but this isn’t the same killer audiences have followed since 2014. The fifth installment of the action franchise has officially been confirmed and early details suggest it’s going in a very different direction.
Unlike previous entries, John Wick 5 won’t revolve around the High Table, the shadowy council that’s defined much of the series’ conflict. That arc appears to be over. In fact, director Chad Stahelski made it clear the new film won’t simply pick up where Chapter 4 left off. Speaking to Empire, Stahelski said: “The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up. So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation, with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy fuck… I gotta see that.’”

That statement signals a major shift for the franchise. Rather than another round of bullets and blood over old grudges, the creative team appears to be charting new ground. With John Wick: Chapter 4 ending in a way that suggested finality, Chapter 5 looks to function as something of a soft reboot — a pivot rather than a sequel.
This approach may come as a surprise, given the franchise’s consistent acclaim and box office strength. But starting fresh could open up new possibilities: unfamiliar locations, new enemies, and a broader world beyond the familiar faces and neon-lit corridors of the Continental.

Of course, breaking from tradition has its risks. Fan-favorite characters like Ian McShane’s Winston or Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King may not have a place in this next chapter. Without the High Table as a unifying threat, it’s unclear who will stand with Wick—or against him.
Still, after four tightly linked films, a story reset might be just what the franchise needs. John Wick isn’t done yet. But the rules of the game, and the players involved, are about to change.
