Karl Urban has stepped into the arena, and he’s brought the sunglasses and the smirk with him. The first trailer for Mortal Kombat II has landed, and it doesn’t hold back. Urban plays Johnny Cage, the franchise’s self-obsessed action star turned warrior, who seems more interested in his reflection than any powers. But don’t let the charm fool you, he’s here to fight.
Set to hit theaters on October 24, Mortal Kombat II is the follow-up to 2021’s reboot of the brutal video game-inspired franchise. Directed once again by Simon McQuoid, the film dives deeper into the war between Earthrealm and the sinister forces of Outworld. The cast also includes Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The trailer opens on a meta moment: Urban’s Cage is recognized in a bar by a fan of his fictional TV show. When asked about a reboot, he delivers a deadpan dismissal: “Nobody wants that,” he says. “Shit went out in the ’90s.” That’s Cage in a nutshell, blunt, brazen, and forever living in his own spotlight.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat without a bit of attitude. Cage, not known for humility, declares, “I’m just incredibly handsome,” when questioned about his lack of supernatural powers. That line already making the rounds online cements his role as the franchise’s resident egomaniac. Urban’s delivery adds just the right amount of smug to keep it entertaining.

Jeremy Slater penned the script, building on the world originally created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Producing the sequel are McQuoid, Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, and E. Bennett Walsh, with New Line once again backing the project. At this year’s CinemaCon, studio exec Richard Brenner offered a preview, promising fans, “Expect amazing fights, epic battles and a few fatalities,” as he spoke to attendees.
While much of the plot remains under wraps, the trailer sets the tone—stylish, brutal, and unapologetically over-the-top. With Johnny Cage now in the mix, it’s clear Mortal Kombat II isn’t pulling any punches, either in action or attitude.
