Paul Thomas Anderson is back behind the camera, and this time he’s bringing Leonardo DiCaprio along for the ride. One Battle After Another hits theaters on September 26, marking the first collaboration between the two industry heavyweights. With the latest trailer now live, the buzz is only getting louder.
Loosely drawing inspiration from Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, the film introduces DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary who’s traded the chaos of rebellion for a quiet life with his daughter. That fragile peace doesn’t last. Sixteen years after disappearing, an old nemesis, played by Sean Penn, returns, dragging Ferguson back into the fray.

The official Warner Bros. synopsis keeps it tight: “When their evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunites to rescue one of their own’s daughter.”
Anderson has assembled a striking supporting cast. Benicio Del Toro, seen recently in The Phoenician Scheme, takes on the role of “Sensei.” Also featured are Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Wood Harris, and Alana Haim, who last worked with Anderson on Licorice Pizza.
The trailer hints at a world brimming with nostalgia, paranoia, and absurd violence: car chases through empty suburbs, VHS static, bureaucratic dead-ends, and aging radicals navigating a society that forgot them.

Behind the scenes, Anderson shares producing duties with Adam Somner and Sara Murphy, while Will Weiske executive produces. The score is composed by Jonny Greenwood, adding his signature tension to the film’s feverish momentum.
Though a festival debut hasn’t been confirmed, industry eyes are locked on the release. Studio heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took similar risks with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, are betting on another critical and commercial success. Speaking to the press, one executive remarked the movie could “pull in fans from both the arthouse and the blockbuster crowd.” It’s a tall order but Anderson and DiCaprio may just be the duo to do it.
