Riz Ahmed and Lily James Star in Corporate Thriller ‘Relay’ Watch the Trailer

David Mackenzie returns to feature filmmaking this summer with Relay, and critics are saying it’s his most focused and confident project in years. A new trailer released ahead of its August 22 premiere gives a first look at the thriller, which Bleecker Street is set to distribute.

Best known for Hell or High Water, Mackenzie shifts gears with Relay, trading the dusty American frontier for the digital battleground of corporate secrets and whistleblowers. This time, the stakes play out in steel-gray offices and buzzing city streets. The result? A lean, high-stakes character drama that might be his strongest since 2016.

Riz Ahmed leads the cast as Tom, a coldly effective “fixer” whose job is to quietly solve high-profile problems before they hit the headlines. But the carefully calculated system begins to crack when he crosses paths with Sarah, a whistleblower played by Lily James. She’s not just in possession of classified information, she has moral clarity. And that’s something Tom can’t outmaneuver.

Although the full plot remains mostly under wraps, the trailer suggests a tightly wound thriller focused on personal risk, shifting loyalties, and the consequences of revealing protected information. Scenes from the trailer show Tom and Sarah navigating the city, covert meetings, and moments of rising tension.

Relay was shot on location in New York City, including Times Square and downtown Manhattan. Visually gritty it hints at a story embedded in the high-pressure atmosphere of corporate and media power centers in New York.
