‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ New Trailer Brings the Franchise to Its Final Chapter

One last Exorcism in ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’!

Twelve years after they first took on the roles of Ed and Lorraine Warren, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are returning for one final chapter in The Conjuring: The Last Rites. Set for a fall release, the film will mark the conclusion of the $2 billion-grossing horror saga that began in 2013.

The Warrens are drawn back into the supernatural fray in 1986, during what is supposed to be their retirement. Their final case centers on the Smurl family of Pennsylvania, whose real-life claims of demonic activity sparked national attention. Returning characters include Father Gordon, played by Steve Coulter, while new faces Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy play Judy Warren and Tony Spera.

The Last Rites is directed by franchise regular Michael Chaves, working from a script by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Producers James Wan and Peter Safran, two figures often credited with shaping the Conjuring universe, are also back on board. Despite earlier discussions of a more expansive final film, Chaves explained to Entertainment Weekly why the focus ultimately narrowed: “I felt strongly that the biggest, most emotional story we could tell was the most personal story.”

Unlike its predecessors, which leaned heavily on escalating terror and sprawling lore, this final installment is positioned as a more intimate send-off for the Warrens. Wan echoed that sentiment in the same interview: “The beating heart of this franchise is Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson playing Ed and Lorraine,” he said. “The family dynamic, the faith the characters have, and the faith that they have in each other are really the things that drive this particular franchise.”

Supporting cast members include Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, , and John Brotherton. The film is based on the real-life case files of the Warrens and characters created by Chad and Carey Hayes.

While a spinoff series is in development at Max, The Last Rites is intended to wrap up the main film saga. Whether it delivers on that promise or just digs up more ghosts remains to be seen.
