Box Office: ‘Superman’ Stays on Top While ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Struggles to Make a Slash

‘Superman’ keeps the crown, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ brings a blunt hook!

Warner Bros.’ Superman continued its reign, leading the domestic box office for a second straight weekend taking $57.25 million this week in North America. That marks a 54% dip, bringing its U.S. total to $235 million. Overseas, the reboot added $45.2 million, pushing its global figure to $406 million. That’s a solid result for a film tasked with launching a brand-new DC cinematic chapter. But with The Fantastic Four arriving next weekend, Superman faces serious superhero competition.

Still stomping around in second place, Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth brought in $23.4 million domestically, raising its worldwide tally to a hefty $648 million. That includes $371 million from international markets. The dinosaur franchise, now led by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, remains one of the year’s few entries to break the $600 million mark. Yet compared to the previous trilogy — each of which cracked $1 billion — Rebirth may feel like it’s walking in oversized footprints.

Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer clawed its way to third place, opening to $13 million at home and $24.6 million globally. The slasher sequel reunites Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt with newcomers Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders. Despite the familiar faces, buzz has been lukewarm. A modest $18 million budget, will help soften the impact of its mild opening. It’s a nostalgia play, sure — but it might’ve helped if it were actually scary.

The Smurfs returned in animated musical form, placing fourth with $11 million domestically and $36 million worldwide. Rihanna headlines the voice cast, but even with an ensemble packed with names, the film’s start is underwhelming against its $58 million budget.

In fifth, Apple’s F1 added $9.6 million stateside, driving its global total to an impressive $460.8 million. With $307.2 million coming from international markets alone, it’s now Apple’s highest-grossing release to date.

As the summer box office rolls on, established franchises continue to dominate while this weeks fresh entries have struggled to leave a mark. Superman may be holding strong for now, but its reign faces a serious challenge with The Fantastic Four: First Steps hitting theaters this week. Meanwhile, I Know What You Did Last Summer proves that nostalgia alone won’t guarantee a hit, especially when the scares don’t land, all eyes are now on Marvel’s next move.
