A sequel to The Social Network is gaining momentum at Sony, with Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison and The Bear star Jeremy Allen White now in early talks for lead roles. The project, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, marks a return to the world of Facebook, only this time, the stakes are even higher.
Based on The Facebook Files, a series of investigative reports by journalist Jeff Horwitz for The Wall Street Journal, the upcoming drama will explore the platform’s internal knowledge of the harm it caused, ranging from teen mental health issues to the unchecked spread of misinformation and its role in the events of January 6, 2021, when the U.S. Capitol was attacked.

While nothing is official yet, both Madison and White have reportedly met with Sorkin, who is currently assembling a cast and finalizing the production package. If things move forward, Madison would take on the role of Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistleblower who made headlines for leaking internal documents. White would play Horwitz, the reporter who broke the story and triggered a global reckoning.
According to The Hollywood Reporter insiders suggest the tone of the film will land somewhere between Spotlight and The Insider, two acclaimed dramas that dug into whistleblower stories with journalistic intensity.

Sorkin, who took home an Oscar for writing the original 2010 film, is not just returning as screenwriter but stepping into the director’s chair this time. He’s also producing alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser. The project is considered a high priority at Sony and is said to be advancing quickly.
The original Social Network, directed by David Fincher, chronicled the creation of Facebook and earned widespread acclaim. This sequel shifts the lens from the platform’s origin to its reckoning, an evolution from ambition to accountability. We’ll keep you up to date with its progress.
