The Minecraft movie isn’t just a hit—it’s an absolute juggernaut. After three wild weeks in theaters, this pixel-packed adventure has steamrolled its way to a jaw-dropping $720 million globally. Helmed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess and fronted by a star-studded cast including Jason Momoa and Jack Black, this big-screen leap from gaming console to cinema has turned out to be a game-changer…literally.
Opening weekend? More like record-breaking mayhem. The movie blasted out of the gate with $162.7 million domestically, bulldozing past last year’s Super Mario Bros. debut to claim the crown for the biggest launch of any video game adaptation in box office history. It held onto the #1 spot for two solid weeks before giving way to Sinners, but don’t let that fool you the film is still raking it in around the globe.

Despite its eye-watering $150 million budget, Minecraft hit profitability fast and furious, breaking even and then some. The movie’s pace is outstripping even Warner Bros.’ other mega-hit, Barbie, putting it in elite company alongside global titans like Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick.
Critics weren’t exactly swooning—Rotten Tomatoes clocks its score at a less-than-stellar 47%. But audiences? They’re all-in, giving it a glowing 87%. That’s the kind of grassroots love that turns a blockbuster into a cultural event. This flick is proving once again that fan power fuels the biggest wins in today’s Hollywood.

A Minecraft Movie follows a group of individuals stepping into the Minecraft universe via a portal, where they find themselves bemused in a visually enhanced version of the game’s iconic blocky world. Leading the cast is Jason Momoa alongside Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Emma Myers (of Wednesday fame). Joining the adventure is Jack Black, who plays ‘Steve,’ the default character model from the Minecraft game. The film also features a range of blocky elements, including square llamas, pigs, trees, sheep, and fortresses.
After a rocky start to the year for Warner Bros., Minecraft is the win they desperately needed. With square sheep, digital llamas, and a whole lot of nostalgic chaos.
A Minecraft Movie is now playing in theaters worldwide.
