‘Alien: Romulus’ Bloody First Trailer Sees Facehuggers Running Riot

Romulus will be a “standalone” survival horror!

The long-awaited new film in the Alien franchise Alien: Romulus has finally released its first teaser trailer, and it’s a bloody introduction. We’re immediately plunged into a chaotic scene where a horde of Facehuggers are wreaking havoc across the ship.

Written and directed by Fede Alvarez the new film will be a “standalone” story, separate from the previous films in the franchise. In an interview with Total Film Alvarez said: “The reality is that it is a standalone story, but it’s filled with references to every movie. It is truly a love letter to all the other movies.”

Romulus purportedly takes place between the events of Alien and Aliens. The new trailer showcases facehuggers swarming the ship, someone extracting a Xenomorph appendage from their throat, and a split-second glimpse of the fully-grown creature.

The new film has also received the seal of approval from original Alien director, Ridley Scott. Alvarez shared that he arranged a screening for Scott, wanting him to be the first to see it. Despite warnings from colleagues about Scott’s reputation as a tough critic, Alvarez proceeded and was thrilled by Scott’s reaction: “Fede, what can I say? It’s fucking great.”

The official synopsis for the film is still on the vague side when it comes to the plot but it reads as follows:” “In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

As the synopsis suggests the film does have a notably young cast that is made up with Isabela Merced, Cailee Spaeny, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.

With excitement mounting for the re-launch of this classic franchise, especially after the disappointment of Alien Covenant, the potential of Romulus, if it lives up to the teaser is significant. If it delivers on its promises, it could herald the beginning of a whole new generation of Alien films.

Alien: Romulus will be in cinemas worldwide August 16.
