Netflix has officially set a release date for The RIP, its upcoming crime thriller headlined by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The film, announced recently during the streamer’s Tudum event, will premiere globally on January 16, 2026. While a teaser clip was screened during the presentation, it was kept exclusive to attendees, no public footage has been made available yet.
The RIP marks a fresh collaboration between Damon and Affleck, this time under the direction of Joe Carnahan. The film follows a group of Miami police officers who uncover a large stash of illicit cash inside a run-down house. That discovery begins to unravel trust within the unit, triggering tension and paranoia as questions mount about loyalty and motive. The stakes are high, not just because of the money, but because no one knows who to trust.

Artists Equity, the production company founded by Damon and Affleck in 2022, is producing the project. Michael Joe and Kevin Halloran serve as executive producers. Since its inception, Artists Equity has backed a mix of narrative features and documentaries, including Air, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, and Small Things Like These, the latter earning critical acclaim and a Silver Bear win at the Berlin Film Festival.
At Tudum, Netflix dropped a funny skit featuring Affleck and Damon fully in character as their Miami cops from The RIP, trying to bust none other than Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. You can check that out below.
Netflix also confirmed that The RIP will feature an ensemble including Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, Steven Yeun, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler, and Nestor Carbonell. Calle’s character appears to be central to the plot, as early footage reveals a pivotal scene in which Damon and Affleck search her character’s home and uncover the hidden fortune.
The preview revealed a mounting sense of distrust among the officers, as the discovery of the cash sets off a chain reaction of suspicion and internal conflict. Each member of the Miami police team faces intense questioning, blurring the lines between ally and adversary. This atmosphere of paranoia drives the story’s tension, exploring how far people will go when their loyalties are tested by greed and desperation.
With Affleck and Damon back in front of the camera together and in a genre they’ve rarely explored as co-stars — The RIP could mark a compelling new chapter in their shared filmography. One thing’s certain: not all cops are on the same side of the badge in this story.
