Blumhouse in Talks to Acquire ‘Saw’ Franchise Rights From Twisted Pictures

The Game Isn’t Over: Blumhouse makes a play for control of ‘Saw’.

The Saw franchise may have escaped the morgue yet again. Industry sources are reporting that Blumhouse is closing in on a deal to acquire the rights to half of the Saw intellectual property, previously held by Twisted Pictures.

According to Deadline, “Blumhouse is essentially taking over the IP’s ownership from Twisted’s Mark Burg and Oren Koules.” That deal would give Blumhouse control of Twisted’s 50% stake, while Lionsgate continues to hold the other half. The partnership, if finalized, could reset the future of the once-lucrative horror series that has grossed nearly $1 billion globally.

The sale discussions reportedly reignited recently after stalling earlier this year. Pricing disagreements were a major hurdle, but the talks have now reached the point where a deal appears within reach. If it happens, one familiar face could be back behind the scenes.

James Wan, who launched the franchise with Leigh Whannell back in 2004, is expected to regain partial ownership. Deadline reports the connection is possible “thanks to the recent merger between Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster.” That twist brings a full-circle narrative to the story of Saw a franchise born from Wan’s gritty indie vision.

Despite the surprise box office success of Saw X in 2023, development on Saw XI has been derailed. Originally slated for September 26, 2025, the eleventh entry was shelved amid internal conflicts between Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate, leaving the series in limbo.

As it stands, Deadline confirms that “an eleventh installment in the franchise isn’t currently in development,” though sources suggest it’s only a matter of time. Horror fans know the drill: nothing stays dead in this genre not killers, not franchises, not even ownership disputes.

The original Saw, made on a shoestring budget of $1.2 million, earned over $100 million worldwide. That staggering return ignited a sprawling multimedia empire of sequels, games, merchandise, and Halloween costumes. With Blumhouse’s track record for profitable horror and the creative DNA of James Wan possibly returning to the fold, the next chapter could revive Saw with sharper teeth.
