Dwayne Johnson may have confirmed what Hollywood has been whispering about: Darren Aronofsky’s potential role as director of Breakthrough, an upcoming A24 drama. While no official announcement has been made, Johnson’s recent remarks on Instagram all but spell it out. Johnson announced his involvement via Instagram, describing Aronofsky as “one of the greatest to ever do it.”
Johnson said on Instagram “Hungry (and grateful) to play this part and tell this story with one of the greatest to ever do it, @darrenaronofsky. We’ve been friends for years and always talked about collaborating together when something special comes along. He has a singular vision, dark, impressionistic, complex and sharp edged about a seductive, empowering, and dangerously vulnerable subject matter that has greatly influenced the both of us in our younger days of need. Very excited to work with Darren. Rip this twisted character open, go elsewhere.”

The message was posted roughly a week after Deadline reported that Aronofsky is in early discussions to helm Breakthrough, a psychological drama set in early-2000s Southern California. While sources told the outlet a deal has not yet closed, Johnson’s use of present-tense phrasing — “tell this story with” — strongly implies the pairing is already in motion.
Aronofsky, best known for Requiem for a Dream, and The Whale, is known for exploring characters who spiral into self-destruction. Johnson, who will play a supporting role as a motivational guru with a dark side, seems ready to embrace that intensity.

The film will be produced and financed by A24, with Stacey Sher’s Shiny Penny Productions, Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, and others onboard. Zeke Goodman wrote the script, with casting still underway for the lead and additional roles. Johnson’s part, while not the protagonist, is positioned as a key influence on the story’s central arc.
In the same post, Johnson also gave a shoutout to Aronofsky’s next release, saying: “And good luck to Darren & @austinbutler getting ready to kickoff their press tour for their new film, ‘Caught Stealing’. Trailer looks crazy, can’t wait to see the movie.”
Until A24 or Aronofsky confirm his role, Johnson’s comments remain just a tiny hint.
