Making your TV debut at 75 years old is quite something as Arnold Schwarzenegger is the latest ageing action hero to make a return, Sylvester Stallone, 76, is starring as an ageing Mafia capo in Tulsa King, his first venture into streaming.
Schwarzenegger looks incredible at 75, he still has an undeniable screen presence, the voice, cigar smoking & intimidating frame all add to the character, with his son-in-law to be Carter (Jay Baruchel) terrified of him.
In FUBAR Arnie plays CIA agent Luke Brunner on the verge of retirement. To his family however he is a mellow, business owner who sells fitness equipment. His absence throughout the years on “business” has affected his family and he is now divorced from his wife Tally (Fabiana Udenio). But he remains close to his ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro).
The blissfully unaware, self declared old fashioned Luke believes his daughter Emma to be perfect, she’s a straight A student, she doesn’t smoke or drink and she never curses, he proudly declares.
Luke on an undercover mission, is where we meet the series bad guy Boro Polonia (Gabriel Luna). Boro wants to introduce him to his right hand woman, the pair watch on as she beats the living day lights out of a man, the woman with her hair up and dirty clothes, talks trash as she submits her rival.
As Boro unwittingly introduces father & daughter, they awkwardly shake hands. When alone the inquisitive dad finds out his beloved daughter is also with the CIA and not so innocent, as she explodes with a bunch of expletives at her dad.
There is a lot of comedy in this, in a similar vein to Mr & Mrs Smith. Mostly from the now bickering father and daughter. They argue in the car about eachothers lies, whilst casually running over and then reversing onto one of the compounds soldiers, as they make their way out.
The supporting cast also add a comedic value and the team is made up of Luke’s “man in the chair” and frightened of his own shadow Barry (Milan Carter). Aldon (Travis Van Winkle) the stereotypical brooding spy, Roo (Fortune Feimster) she’s sarcastic and doesn’t suffer fools and Tina (Aparna Brielle) the new recruit to the CIA.
Action comedy is something Schwarzenegger is no stranger to, he isn’t the most subtle of comedy performers, but this is undoubtably fun. Yes it’s daft at times, it’s not big budget and hasn’t got the gloss of a location hoping spy thriller, this is enjoyable for its comedy more than anything else.
All 8 episodes of FUBAR are available to stream on Netflix.
