Denzel Washington has enjoyed a long and fruitful collaboration with directors Ridley and Tony Scott. His connection with Tony Scott, in particular, was marked by a deep creative relationship that spanned several years and resulted in multiple iconic films. This dynamic partnership continued right up until Tony Scott’s sad passing in 2012. Washington frequently served as Tony’s leading man, delivering powerful performances in films like Man On Fire, Déjà Vu, and Unstoppable.
Now, Washington is set to reunite with Ridley Scott for Gladiator II, marking their first collaboration since 2007’s American Gangster. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Washington praised both directors, describing them as “great filmmakers.” He also highlighted Ridley Scott’s ongoing passion for filmmaking, calling the director’s enduring energy an “inspiration.”
Working closely with both Tony and Ridley Scott has given Washington a deep understanding of what sets each of them apart as exceptional filmmakers. While he doesn’t draw direct comparisons, it’s clear that he appreciates the distinct qualities that make them both stand out in their own right.
I don’t compare directors, you see the different personalities. I suppose they do [have similarities]. On the days when we’re shooting, I’m busy with what I’m doing. So I’m not comparing this one to that one, but obviously both are great filmmakers. They can’t miss. He’s [Ridley] engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration

In Gladiator II, Denzel Washington takes on the role of Macrinus, a former slave who has risen to prominence as a successful merchant and arms dealer. The sequel is set years after the original, with Paul Mescal’s Lucius now living in Numidia, a region in North Africa where his mother sent him as a child to escape the grasp of the Roman Empire.
However, fate pulls Lucius back to Rome, where he finds himself thrust into the brutal world of gladiators. As he navigates this treacherous arena, Lucius faces new enemies, including the formidable Roman general Acacius, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, and reconnects with his mother, Lucilla.
Gladiator II hits theaters on November 22, 2024. Check out Denzel Washington’s full interview with Empire Magazine here.
