James Gunn has confirmed that Wonder Woman is officially heading back to the big screen, this time as part of DC Studios’ rebooted cinematic universe. Speaking exclusively to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn revealed, “Wonder Woman’s being written right now.” It’s the clearest update yet on the fate of the iconic Amazon warrior in this new era of DC storytelling.
The confirmation comes after months of speculation about whether Diana Prince would be left behind in the franchise overhaul. So far, Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-head Peter Safran have announced projects starring Superman, Batman, and Supergirl. But Wonder Woman remained the big question mark. Gunn’s new update clarifies her future. “Wonder Woman’s a separate thing,” he said, referring to the already-announced Paradise Lost series. “It’s slow moving, but it’s moving. We’re working on Wonder Woman.”

Gunn didn’t mention who might wield the lasso this time around, but one thing’s certain, it won’t be Gal Gadot. While she was a defining part of the previous DC era, plans for her third solo outing were shelved after the leadership change. In 2022, director Patty Jenkins commented on the cancellation, saying, “It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”
David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, told investors in May that Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are “crucial characters” in the studio’s plans. Gunn agreed, telling EW, “I think that he got that from something I said. I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us.”

While fans now know a new Wonder Woman film is underway, there’s still no word on a creative team. Likewise, casting remains an open question. As for Paradise Lost, Gunn previously teased the HBO Max series as “almost like Game of Thrones with Westeros but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island.”
The road to Themyscira might be slow, but for fans eager to see Wonder Woman wield the Lasso of Truth again, the wheels are finally turning.
