James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Gets First Reactions — And They’re Flying High

James Gunn’s much-anticipated Superman has finally broken cover, with the first social media reactions arriving from critics who caught early screenings ahead of its theatrical debut this week. As the only DC Studios film hitting theaters in 2025, the pressure was always going to be immense. Now, the early verdicts are in and they paint a promising picture.

With David Corenswet donning the cape and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor, expectations were high. Based on the first wave of impressions, Gunn appears to have met the moment. Some are even suggesting he’s exceeded it. “The perfect superhero movie and a terrific start for the new DC Studios,” wrote Erik Davis of Fandango, signaling a significant tonal shift for the DC Universe.

Longtime DC fans have waited years for a version of Superman that feels both fresh and true to the character’s roots. Gunn’s reboot seems to land that balance. Sean O’Connell of ComicBook.com described how the film left him with the “biggest, goofiest, stupidest, full-faced grin as I revelled in everything @JamesGunn staged.” His praise extended to the ensemble cast and the film’s attention to world-building.

Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky was equally enthusiastic about the film’s central trio. “Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult nail their roles perfectly,” she wrote, adding that the “electric” connection between Superman and Lois Lane helps power the emotional core of the story.

Perri Nemiroff of Collider emphasized the film’s emotional resonance, stating, “It made me so damn happy.” She continued, “It is loaded with exhilarating action set pieces and well-placed humor and levity, but the beating heart of the film is Superman’s humanity, and his insistence on doing good and making the world a better place.”

Though full reviews remain under wraps until closer to release, it’s clear from the first wave of responses that Superman could be the tonal and narrative reset the DCU has been chasing. With a blend of optimism, sincerity, and big-screen spectacle, Gunn’s take may give fans and the studio a much-needed win.
