There’s a storm gathering in the suburbs. HBO’s latest crime drama, Task, just dropped its first trailer and if early signs are anything to go by, it’s not going to be a peaceful ride. Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey headline a gritty tale of law, crime, and moral ambiguity, penned by Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby.
Set against the backdrop of working-class Philadelphia, Task follows Ruffalo’s FBI agent as he leads a mismatched task force. Their mission: stop a string of brutal robberies. But the real twist lies in their target, Pelphrey’s seemingly ordinary family man who’s hiding more than just skeletons in the closet.
The trailer, set to the haunting strains of Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience,” lays out a grim atmosphere. This isn’t your average cat-and-mouse thriller, it’s about choices, pressure, and the slow unraveling of lives already frayed at the edges. And yes, things look bleak for at least one of these men.
Ruffalo appears to be channeling his inner Mare, only this time, with a federal badge and a little less restraint. Pelphrey, meanwhile, plays it cool and unnervingly quiet, a man who blends into his neighborhood until it’s too late to notice the cracks.
Brad Ingelsby, best known for the critically acclaimed Mare of Easttown, returns to familiar territory with Task. The show mirrors some of the same thematic undercurrents, troubled characters, working-class struggles, and a slow-burning descent into chaos, set once again in the outer edges of Philadelphia.
The supporting cast packs depth too: Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Thuso Mbedu, and Martha Plimpton are just a few of the names rounding out the ensemble. Based on an original idea by Ingelsby, the series is directed by Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, with Ruffalo also stepping in as executive producer.
Task is set to premiere sometime in September, with episodes released weekly. Expect a slow burn, high stakes, and two men heading for a collision neither of them can walk away from clean.
