Since The Batman hit theaters in 2022, work on The Batman Part II has been steadily progressing for the past two years and updates have been sparse. Recently, Matt Reeves shared a few minor plot details with SFX magazine. While Reeves’ Batman 2 script has gone through several drafts, it has yet to be completed. DCU head James Gunn previously reassured fans, stating that the script would be submitted “when Matt thinks it’s ready.”
In a recent interview with Collider regarding The Penguin, Reeves confirmed that his original vision for The Batman was always intended to be part of a larger trilogy. He explained that The Batman Part II is just another chapter in the Dark Knight’s ongoing journey. Despite some adjustments along the way, Reeves reaffirmed that his plan for a trilogy remains on track. When asked if the trilogy was still in the works following the success of the first film, Reeves responded confidently, “Yes, that is still the plan. I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.”
Despite the addition of The Penguin spin-off series, which features Colin Farrell returning as Oz Cobb from The Batman, Matt Reeves assured that the overall direction of the trilogy remains unchanged. While acknowledging that there have been some minor adjustments, Reeves emphasized that the core of their trajectory is still intact, saying.
Things kind of shifted. So, when we came up with the idea to do The Penguin , that was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s story, and wanted to tell this story of his beginning of rise to power. Because we know that he’s introduced in The Batman as a kind of mid-level, sort of overlooked, mocked figure, who’s not yet in anyone’s eyes the kingpin we come to know him as in the lore. And so, that was deliberate because I wanted— whereas it wasn’t Batman’s origin story, I wanted the origin stories of these other characters, of the Rogues Gallery and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie.

DC movies have faced significant challenges in recent years, from Zack Snyder’s tumultuous Justice League to a series of box office flops like Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Adam. However, Matt Reeves managed to carve out a unique and successful path with The Batman, delivering a film filled with gripping atmosphere and tension that set it apart from the franchise’s recent struggles. When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in late 2022, fans feared that Reeves’ vision might be scrapped. Fortunately, they were reassured that his plans remained intact, and Reeves confirmed, “We’ve given big portions of it to DC already,” assuring fans that the sequel is well on its way.
When will ‘The Batman Part II’ start shooting?
Whilst discussing the script, Reeves also confirmed that shooting for The Batman Part II will begin next year. “We want to be able to gear up early next year,” he stated, signaling that the trilogy’s development is moving forward as planned.
We are finishing up, Mattson and I are at it every day. We’re getting very close. We’ve given big portions of it to DC already and they’ve read it. They’re super excited, and we’re trying to get — we want to be able to gear up early next year and shoot the movie next year. We’re excited about it. We’re getting close. It’s very exciting.
