‘Mountainhead’ Trailer Follows Four Tech Billionaires as the World Unravels in Jesse Armstrong’s HBO Satire

Billionaire’s bro trip gone wrong in Jesse Armstrong’s AI satire.

A new trailer has dropped for Mountainhead, HBO’s upcoming satire about tech power and unchecked ambition, marking Jesse Armstrong’s first feature film after Succession. And if there’s any confusion about whether viewers are meant to sympathize with the billionaires at the center of it all, the answer is a firm NO.

Set in a snow-covered, high-altitude retreat, Mountainhead follows four tech moguls taking a break from their empires. Randall (Steve Carell), Souper (Jason Schwartzman), Venis (Cory Michael Smith), and Jeff (Ramy Youssef) may differ in style, but they all share a belief that vast wealth somehow makes them untouchable, even as the world they helped build starts to unravel.

Central to the film’s tension is Traam, an AI-driven social media platform developed by Venis. As global unrest escalates, international authorities begin linking a surge in ethnic violence to tools like Traam. Yet the group reacts with characteristic deflection. “Obviously it’s not on me. Why would you even say that?” Venis snaps in the trailer, after being told—preemptively—that he’s not to blame.

Armstrong’s script blends satire with unease. The characters’ cavalier attitude toward real-world consequences feels uncomfortably familiar, especially in a time when actual tech CEOs routinely make global headlines for their AI ambitions and ideological outbursts.

Behind the scenes, Mountainhead was made quickly. HBO greenlit the project in January, with casting announced by March and production wrapping in April. Filming took place in Park City, Utah. Armstrong directed and wrote the screenplay, working alongside several Succession veterans including executive producers Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, Tony Roche, and Mark Mylod.

Though comedic in moments, the film doesn’t shy away from darker themes. The idea of buying up countries as a way out of a mess is played for laughs—but also points to the scale of power these characters wield without accountability.

Mountainhead premieres May 31 on HBO in the US, and Sunday, June 1st in the UK on Sky and NOWTV, you can check out the trailer below.
