New ‘Gladiator II’ Trailer Confirms Lucius as Son of Russell Crowe’s Maximus

Paul Mescal & Pedro Pascal do battle in Ridley Scott’s sequel!

The latest Gladiator II trailer has unveiled a stunning revelation: Lucius (Paul Mescal) is actually the son of Maximus, the iconic character played by Russell Crowe in the original film. This twist shatters the belief Lucius had held his entire life, thinking he was the son of Lucius Verus I. The discovery adds a deeper significance to the legacy of Maximus, enriching the connections between the two films.

Although Lucius’s parentage is never directly addressed in the 2000 Gladiator, there were subtle hints that suggest he could be Maximus’s son. In the trailer, Lucius’ mother, Lucilla (once again played by Connie Nielsen), discloses the truth as Lucius prepares for an epic confrontation in the Colosseum.

The sequel takes place years later, Lucius lives in Numidia, a northern African region where his mother sent him as a child, away from the Roman Empire’s reach. Fate brings Lucius back to Rome, where he becomes embroiled in the harsh arena of gladiators. There, he encounters new challenges, including Roman general Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal, while also reuniting with his mother.

The trailer sees Denzel Washington as Macrinus, a former slave who has risen to become a prominent merchant and arms dealer. Fred Hechinger takes on the role of Emperor Caracalla, while Joseph Quinn portrays Emperor Gata, Caracalla’s brother, rounding out the ensemble cast.
