The minds behind True Detective Season 1 might not be done with its most iconic duo just yet. Nic Pizzolatto, creator of the HBO anthology series, recently hinted at the possibility of revisiting Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, the troubled detectives played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the show’s debut season. Speaking on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, Pizzolatto revealed that the idea of a continuation has been discussed between the trio.
“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day,” Pizzolatto said. “It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”

The possibility of a sequel to Season 1 is bound to spark excitement among longtime fans. That 2014 run, drenched in dread and philosophical musings, earned McConaughey and Harrelson widespread acclaim and multiple Emmy nominations. It remains, for many—including its lead—untouched in quality.
“My favorite season — and I feel like I can say this objectively — is Season 1,” McConaughey told Variety earlier this year. “I happen to be in that one, so I thought that was incredible, incredible television and a great series. I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning.”

Since their HBO days, McConaughey and Harrelson have maintained a close relationship. They’re currently teaming up again—albeit in comedic form—for an upcoming Apple TV+ series where they play fictionalized versions of themselves.
Pizzolatto, meanwhile, stepped away from True Detective after Season 3. “I was the one who walked away from my contract at the end of 2019,” he explained on the podcast, citing personal reasons including gaining custody of his daughter and a need to step back from darker material.
With HBO now developing a fifth season under Night Country showrunner Issa López, the future of Cohle and Hart remains uncertain. But Pizzolatto’s words suggest the door isn’t closed, it’s just waiting to be opened again.
