Rachel Brosnahan Takes the Stand for Apple TV in ‘Presumed Innocent’ Season 2

Apple TV+ turns ‘Presumed Innocent’ into an anthology!

Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to lead the second season of Apple TV+’s legal thriller Presumed Innocent, stepping into her first major TV role since wrapping The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Apple has confirmed that Brosnahan will also serve as an executive producer on the series, joining the team behind the show’s next chapter, which moves away from the Season 1 storyline and original source material. Jake Gyllenhaal, who led the first season and played a prosecutor accused of murder, remains on board as an executive producer.

With Season 2, the series transitions into anthology territory. The upcoming installment draws from Dissection of a Murder, an as-yet-unreleased novel by Jo Murray, due out in 2026. While details remain sparse, a synopsis from Pan Macmillan hints at the premise: “When Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case, she’s shocked at how high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn’t be the kind of case she’s leading; it’s way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her.”

Brosnahan’s casting marks a return to prestige drama for the Emmy winner, whose breakout role as Midge Maisel earned her five Emmy nominations and a win in 2018. She also collected two Golden Globes over the show’s five-season run. Her TV resume also includes an earlier Emmy-nominated turn in Netflix’s House of Cards.

Season One featured Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor thrust into the spotlight as the prime suspect in the murder of one of his colleagues. The crime sends shock waves through the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office, where colleagues mourn the loss, grapple with the fallout of an affair, and embark on a relentless pursuit of justice through a gripping murder investigation.

Behind the camera, David E. Kelley and Erica Lipez will share showrunning duties. Kelley developed the series for television and executive produces through David E. Kelley Productions. The show is produced by Warner Bros. Television, with J.J. Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich (Bad Robot), Matthew Tinker, Dustin Thomason, Gyllenhaal, and Brosnahan all serving as executive producers. Scott Turow, whose novel inspired the first season, returns as a co-executive producer.

A new case, a new cast, and a new story, still under the same high-stakes legal spotlight Apple TV+ is betting on.
