Paramount Pictures unveiled a trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Tuesday, showcasing a new mission for Sonic & Co, his latest rival Shadow arrives on the scene, with Keanu Reeves lending his voice. The new film in the series features Reeves as the iconic video game character Shadow, who first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001 as a darker counterpart to Sonic. Shadow is dark and intense, yet possesses abilities akin to those of our heroic hedgehog.
The latest trailer begins with James Marsden’s character, Tom, narrating, “Sonic, you’ve finally found your family,” followed by a narrator introducing Shadow’s arrival, “Shadow’s story began a lot like yours, Sonic, but where you found family and friends, Shadow found only pain and loss.”
In the third installment of the film series based on Sega’s video games, Sonic teams up with his allies, Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), to take on Shadow. This enigmatic antagonist possesses powers that surpass anything they have encountered previously. Outclassed in every aspect, Team Sonic is compelled to form an unexpected alliance to thwart Shadow’s plans and safeguard the world.
Despite announcing his readiness to retire from acting since 2022, Jim Carrey has returned for this latest installment, reprising his role as Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik from the previous two films. The official trailer for the eagerly awaited sequel, which shows Team Sonic teaming up with Robotnik, also reveals that Carrey will play a second character, Robotnik’s grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik.
The official synopsis for the film reads, “Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before, With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”
Jeff Fowler returns as the director for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 having directed the previous two films and the initial installment of the Knuckles series, establishing himself as the definitive Sonic filmmaker. Ben Schwartz continues to lend his voice to Sonic, with Colleen O’Shaughnessey voicing Tails, and James Marsden reprising his role as Tom Wachowski. The intriguing casting of Keanu Reeves as Shadow 100% adds to the anticipation.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premieres in theaters December 21.
