According to Marvel Cinematic Universe insider Daniel RPK, Spider-Man 4 is now being developed with a multiverse plot. While official confirmation from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios is still pending, this new rumor has sparked excitement and concern among fans. The lack of an official announcement for a fourth Spider-Man movie is surprising, especially given the persistent rumors circulating over the past year. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, more details are anticipated soon. However, for now, fans will have to settle for these intriguing rumors.
Previous reports suggest that there have been disagreements between Sony’s Tom Rothman and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige regarding the direction of the film’s plot. Feige reportedly wants to scale back the multiverse elements in favor of a more intimate story, while Rothman is eager to capitalize on the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home by bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective versions of Peter Parker. Adding to the speculation, Jon Watts, who directed the previous Spider-Man trilogy, will not return for this installment. Instead, several filmmakers, including Justin Lin, have been rumored to be in talks to take over the director’s chair.
Tom Holland is expected to reprise his role as the MCU’s Spider-Man, with Zendaya returning as MJ. However, there are rumors that Holland may be growing weary of playing the iconic hero, leading to speculation that Spider-Man 4 could be his final solo outing as the web-slinger. Nevertheless, Holland is likely to continue appearing in other MCU projects, including the upcoming Avengers films. The script for the new movie is being penned by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who previously worked on Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Interestingly, the tenth anniversary of Marvel Studios and Sony’s collaboration to produce Spider-Man films within the MCU is approaching. In February 2015, the two studios struck a deal that allowed Spider-Man to appear in MCU-produced films while still being distributed by Sony. Over the years, Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker has made him one of the MCU’s most beloved characters, appearing in six major projects.
In a 2023 interview, Kevin Feige revealed that the studio had “cracked the story” for Spider-Man 4 and that script development had begun. Initial rumors suggested the film would feature a ‘street-level’ story with Spider-Man and Daredevil teaming up to take on Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin. However, production delays and shifting release dates have left fans wondering about the film’s future. Daniel RPK’s latest report, suggesting a multiverse-focused storyline, may explain these delays, and the film is now rumored to be targeting a July 2026 release date.
While some fans are disappointed by the prospect of another multiverse story, others are excited about a Garfield and Maguire reunion alongside the possibility of a team-up between Peter Parker and Miles Morales also. If these rumors prove true, Spider-Man 4 could be a thrilling addition to the MCU, blending the familiar with new multiversal twists.
