With the highly anticipated third season set to land on Netflix June 27, Squid Game is approaching what’s expected to be its final chapter. The global phenomenon that began with a deadly playground twist in 2021 is ready to wrap, but talk of potential spin-offs is keeping speculation alive.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk isn’t ruling anything out, though it sounds like any extension of the franchise won’t come soon. Speaking to SFX Magazine, Hwang reflected on the demanding journey behind the show’s rise. “I poured over six years of my life into Squid Game, not even counting when I first wrote the original script, more than a decade ago,” he said. “There were times I was completely exhausted and under immense pressure, but I know I’ll miss even those moments some day.”

Hwang acknowledged that while ideas for further stories exist, including potential spin-offs covering the timeline between seasons one and two, the reality of revisiting the world isn’t so simple. “I’ll miss and hold onto that feeling for a long time. But if you were to ask whether I’d do it all again, I’m not sure I’d have the stamina,” he told SFX Magazine.
The third season will also serve as a farewell for its central character, Seong Gi-hun, brought to life by Lee Jung-jae. After four years immersed in the role of Player 456, the actor is preparing to step away from a character that’s become iconic. “I poured my heart and soul into this project for so many years,” Lee said. “When I first met Gi-hun, I really wanted to do a good job with this guy and really flesh out this character and add vitality to the show.”

Reflecting on the emotional weight of closing the series, Lee added, “As Gi-hun, and also Lee Jung-jae, I have so many memories with the cast and crew that helped make Squid Game. I felt very emotional and thought of all the fans and global audience who cheered for this project and so many thoughts were rolling around in my head.”
David Fincher is reportedly developing an English-language Squid Game series for Netflix, marking a major expansion of the hit franchise but at the moment specifics are still under wraps. While Squid Game season 3 looks to tie off the main story, the door isn’t shut. The appetite for more is clear and in the streaming age, no hit ever truly stays down for long.
