Ryan Gosling is officially heading to a galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm just dropped a bombshell: Star Wars: Starfighter, a brand-new standalone movie starring Gosling and helmed by Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy, will blast into theaters on May 28, 2027.
The announcement was made with much fanfare during the annual Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, where Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni took the stage to confirm what fans had been speculating for months.

Gosling and Levy themselves showed up to hype the crowd, with Gosling donning a cap that read “Never tell me the odds.” The crowd went wild when an image popped up on screen showing a set of Gosling’s childhood Star Wars bedsheets—courtesy of his proud mom.
Levy, who’s been quietly developing the project since 2022, is teaming up once again with screenwriter Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project) to craft a story that zips away from the familiar Skywalker-centric saga. Starfighter will chart a new path in the Star Wars universe, taking place roughly five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
This marks a bold move for the franchise, signaling a fresh start beyond legacy characters. Importantly, Starfighter is not tied to any previous trilogies or series, it’s a clean slate. It will be the second Star Wars film to hit theaters in this new era, following The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is set to arrive May 22, 2026.
Whether Starfighter has any connection to the early-2000s Star Wars: Starfighter video game remains unclear, but fans are already running wild with theories.
Gosling piloting a next-gen starfighter with Shawn Levy calling the shots? Yeah, we’re all in.
