Two world leaders. One exploding Air Force jet. Zero patience for each other. Heads of State, Amazon’s latest action-comedy, is now streaming on Prime Video, delivering global mayhem led by Idris Elba and John Cena as a mismatched political duo forced into survival mode.
Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Nobody), the film follows UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Elba) and U.S. President Will Derringer (Cena), who find themselves targeted by a mysterious foreign adversary while mid-flight. Both men have little in common, aside from massive egos and a long history of political sniping. When disaster strikes, they’re forced into an uneasy alliance that could decide the fate of the free world or end in mutual destruction.

Amazon MGM Studios describes the film this way: “The UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke and U.S. President Will Derringer have a not-so-friendly and very public rivalry that jeopardizes their countries’ ‘special relationship.’ But when they become the targets of a powerful and ruthless foreign adversary… they are begrudgingly forced to rely on the only two people they can trust: each other.”
Priyanka Chopra Jonas enters as MI6 agent Noel Bisset, a high-caliber operative who may be the only adult in the room. Her arrival injects some grit and grounding into a narrative otherwise filled with gunfire, sarcasm, and airborne diplomacy. Cena and Elba’s back-and-forth delivers the tension, but Chopra Jonas brings the control.

The film’s script, written by Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query (based on a story by Query) leans into the absurdity of its premise. Think less political drama and more buddy-action chaos. Naishuller’s direction favors energy over subtlety, and the set pieces reflect it. There’s espionage, helicopter stunts, and enough explosions to require their own summit.
The supporting cast includes Jack Quaid, Carla Gugino, Stephen Root, and Paddy Considine, each adding flavor to the international pile-up. Heads of State is now available to stream on Prime Video as of today July 2, marking Amazon’s latest push into original action-comedy territory. It’s diplomacy…with bullets.
