Sydney Sweeney Says Her ‘Barbarella’ Remake Is Coming Together Just Don’t Expect It for Awhile Yet

Edgar Wright’s Barbarella with Sydney Sweeney still in the works.

Sydney Sweeney is inching closer to bringing Barbarella back to the big screen. While details remain under wraps, the actor and producer confirmed that development on the long awaited remake is still very much alive — even if the wait isn’t over just yet.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Sweeney gave a rare update on the project. “I was just in London and had a meeting to discuss the story and the script,” she said. “I can’t say too much, but it’s really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It’s a long process. I don’t think people realise how long some things can take, but it’s gonna be worth the wait.”

Announced in 2022, Sweeney’s Barbarella will see her take on the title role, originally made famous by Jane Fonda in the 1968 cult sci-fi film. That announcement was followed by a burst of speculation and fan interest but little in the way of actual production news. That changed when Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho director Edgar Wright signed on in 2024 to helm the film, following his remake of The Running Man, which stars Sweeney’s Anyone But You co-star Glen Powell.

While Barbarella remains in development limbo, Sweeney has barely had a moment to pause. In the last few years alone, she’s appeared in Sony’s Madame Web, starred in and produced the indie horror hit Immaculate, and anchored the rom-com success Anyone But You. In 2025, she’ll be seen in Ron Howard’s Eden, Apple’s thriller Echo Valley, Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, and a Christy Martin biopic — all while returning to Euphoria for its third season.

Barbarella, of course, has a long and tortured development history. At least four other attempts to reboot the property, including iterations involving Robert Rodriguez and Nicolas Winding Refn have stalled out since the 1990s. But with Sweeney and Wright attached, Sony’s version may be the first to actually lift off.

Whether or not it flies, fans will be watching closely. “It’s gonna be worth the wait,” Sweeney promises.
