Caught Stealing, hitting theaters August 29, stars Austin Butler as Hank Thompson a former baseball star whose best days are behind him. Instead of ballparks, he’s now slinging drinks at a dive bar and trying to stay under the radar in late-90s New York. That doesn’t last long.
A favor for a neighbor spirals into chaos. What starts as cat-sitting ends with gangsters on every corner and no clear reason why. According to the synopsis: “Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why.” Before he knows it, he’s running for his life through the city’s underworld.

Joining Butler are Zoë Kravitz, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Carol Kane, Griffin Dunne, and Matt Smith as the punk-rock neighbor Russ. Bad Bunny, Regina King, and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai round out the ensemble, bringing even more energy to a film already stacked with talent.
Darren Aronofsky adapted the film from Charlie Huston’s novel of the same name. It’s the first in a trilogy following Hank Thompson, with Six Bad Things and A Dangerous Man next in line. Huston also wrote the screenplay, keeping the adaptation close to its source. Filming took place in New York in fall 2024 with cinematography by Matthew Libatique, Aronofsky’s frequent collaborator.

The full official synopsis reads: “Hank Thompson was a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore, but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl, tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant. When his punk-rock neighbor Russ asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why. As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he’s got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out…”
For Aronofsky, this is also a hometown tribute. “A true love letter to the greatest city in the world,” he called it during Sony’s CinemaCon presentation. This time, the drama is fast-paced, the stakes are criminal, and the game is survival.
