HBO has recently unveiled the newest trailer for its upcoming series, The Sympathizer, adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same title. The series features Robert Downey Jr., who will appear in multiple roles.
With the fate of the Vietnam War hanging in the balance, The Captain (Hoa Xuande) is dispatched from the North Vietnamese forces to infiltrate the South Vietnamese army. Upon his arrival in the United States towards the war’s conclusion, the protagonist settles in a community of South Vietnamese refugees. Here, he is tasked with a mission to relay information back to the Viet Cong.
The official synopsis for the HBO limited series reads as follows: “The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.”
The trailer seemingly suggests that The Captain, operating for both the CIA and the Viet Cong, might be a double agent. With Robert Downey Jr., playing his handler, he assures him, “By the time I’m through with you, you’ll be able to blend in with the Harvard rowing crew.”
Alongside Downey Jr. and Xuande the cast also includes, Sandra Oh, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, and Alan Trong.
This marks Downey’s first onscreen appearance since his Oscar win for his performance in Oppenheimer. Audiences can witness his and The Captain’s mission unfold on HBO and Max starting April 14 in the US. The Sympathizer will also be available on Sky Atlantic, although their official page for the series currently states ‘Coming 2024.’
