Top Boy’s Micheal Ward Stars In Netflix’s Sports Drama ‘The Beautiful Game’

The film shines a light on the Homeless World Cup.

Netflix has released the first trailer for their upcoming football drama The Beautiful Game, starring Michael Ward and Bill Nighy. The film will focus on the sporting event, the Homeless World Cup.

The Homeless World Cup is an annual international football tournament organized by the Homeless World Cup Foundation, that has been running for over two decades. Raising awareness about homelessness and social exclusion while empowering participants through the transformative power of sport. More than 1.2 million people have participated in the tournament, representing nearly 70 different countries.

Bill Nighy stars as the manager of England’s homeless football team as they travel to Rome for the World Cup. Michael Ward plays Vinny, the star player who has a troubled past.

The trailer opens with Nighy’s Mal saying, “That’s him, he’s the one I told you about,” while Ward’s Vinny declares, “I was a player,” as we see him playing for Premier League club West Ham United. We discover that Vinny was a pro who has fallen on hard times and has been living in his car for months. He’s given a second chance at this tournament as he tries his best to fit into a new team.

Alongside Oscar nominee Nighy and Top Boy star Ward, the cast also includes, Susan Wokoma, Callum Scott Howells, Kit Young and Valeria Golino.

The film is directed by Thea Sharrock and written by the multiple award-winning novelist and screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

The Beautiful Game will be available on Netflix on March 29.
