Director Joseph Kosinski has confirmed that Top Gun 3 is officially in the works, and while details remain under wraps, the filmmaker promises a bold new direction for the franchise. In a recent interview with GQ, Kosinski described the upcoming installment. “I think we’ve found a way to do it, not only in the scale of what we’re proposing, but the idea itself of the story we’re telling,” he said. “We’re thinking much bigger than… It’s a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it’s much bigger than himself.” The sky, apparently, is no longer the limit.
That philosophical tilt doesn’t mean the franchise’s ace is handing over the stick just yet. Kosinski insisted, “Yeah, there’s still more story to tell for him. There’s one last ride. So we’re working on it now. Ehren Kruger, who wrote F1, is writing the script.” The message is clear: Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell isn’t taxiing to the hangar, he’s throttling up for another thunderous take‑off, and the director wants the script perfect before wheels‑up.

Kosinski’s taste for towering challenges is nothing new. He compared his next high‑G outing to his Formula One drama, reminding GQ that when studios bet nine‑figure budgets, the lead actor must be a brand unto himself. “There’s Brad, there’s Tom, [and] there’s Leo, essentially.” It’s a shortlist carved from box‑office granite, and it explains why Cruise remains mission‑critical. Audiences worldwide trust these guys to a deliver spectacle.
Yet the filmmaker’s talk of “existential crisis” hints that Top Gun 3 isn’t just about faster jets or steeper dives. Maverick is facing something larger than altitude restrictions, something, Kosinski suggests, that could make the hero feel “small” despite the IMAX‑sized action. In other words: cue the afterburners, but keep the therapist on speed dial.

Side‑note for gearheads: Kosinski hasn’t forgotten Cruise’s checkered‑flag past. He joked that a crossover with Brad Pitt may yet surface if schedules align. After all, “Brad said he’d like to work with Tom again as long as he doesn’t have to hang off an airplane,” the director recalled. Pair that with Pitt’s own racer, Sonny Hayes, and you’re flirting with a Days of Thunder reunion tailor‑made for die‑hard petrolheads. Kosinski even teased the ultimate grudge match: “I heard about this epic go‑kart battle on Interview with a Vampire that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn’t pay to see those two go head‑to‑head on the track?”
For now, the flight plan remains classified, the release date unannounced, and the fandom on full throttle. but the promise of “one last ride” for Maverick is enough to keep fans buckled in.
