It’s been three years since Top Gun: Maverick roared into cinemas and became a billion-dollar phenomenon. Naturally, fans have been scanning the skies for signs of a follow-up. And while the afterburners aren’t fully lit just yet, the sequel’s trajectory is becoming clearer thanks to Tom Cruise himself.
In a recent interview with Australia’s Today show, Cruise confirmed that a third Top Gun film is more than just wishful thinking. Asked if another chapter was on the horizon, he replied: “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible.” Cruise added, “It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”

Cruise’s mention of Days of Thunder may have raised a few eyebrows, but it’s no throwaway comment. The 1990 NASCAR drama has developed a cult following over the years, and his openness to revisiting it suggests he’s in a reflective, legacy-focused phase of his career. With Maverick proving that decades-old IP can still draw massive crowds, revisiting another high-octane classic doesn’t seem far-fetched.
But, there’s no shortage of irons in the fire. He revealed that he’s juggling multiple projects behind the scenes, including a completed collaboration with The Revenant director Alejandro Iñárritu, and several in development with longtime creative partner Christopher McQuarrie. “There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now,” he said. “I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film.”

Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick co-star Jay Ellis gave fans a bit more insight back in February. In an interview with Us Weekly, Ellis said the team is “still working on the script,” but emphasized Cruise’s dedication to delivering something truly worth watching.
If the third film can recreate the scale, spectacle, and sheer entertainment value of Maverick, Cruise’s high standards might pay off again. For now, though, it’s all talk and development. But with Cruise in the cockpit, we can at least be assured of one thing: when it finally lands, Top Gun 3 won’t be phoning it in.
