Watch The New Trailer For Dev Patel’s Brutal Directional Debut ‘Monkey Man’

Patel seeks bloody revenge!

Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for Dev Patel’s directorial debut, Monkey Man. Patel has come a long way since his days as the skinny teen Anwar on the hit UK show Skins. He has evolved into an established and acclaimed actor, somewhat of a British national treasure, and is now a fully-fledged director.

The new trailer opens with Patel’s character, ‘Kid’, declaring, “Do you remember me?” as he points a gun at the film’s villain—the man who seemingly destroyed his and his mother’s lives. Monkey Man sees Patel’s character inspired by his mother’s stories from Hindu mythology, particularly the deity Hanuman, who is described as half man, half monkey.

Monkey Man looks like an exciting revenge thriller, with Patel’s character, only known as ‘Kid’, portrayed as a fight club brawler. He embarks on a John Wick-style mission in an Indian metropolis to avenge his childhood trauma against the city’s criminal underworld, which took everything from him.

The official synopsis for the film reads as follows: “Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.”

In 2021 it was reported that Netflix had acquired the film, but it has in fact been bought by Universal and Jordan Peele’s production company, meaning it will now receive a theatrical release.

Monkey Man will be in theaters April 5 in US, and will be in select UK theaters from March 29.
