Aaron Sorkin is officially returning to the world of Facebook and this time, he’s calling the shots from the director’s chair. Sony has confirmed that The Social Network Part II is moving forward with Sorkin on board to both write and direct, revisiting the digital empire that changed everything. While David Fincher helmed the original 2010 film, which chronicled the early days of Mark Zuckerberg’s platform, this follow-up aims to dissect the darker chapters that followed.
As first reported by Deadline, the sequel will focus on revelations from The Wall Street Journal’s 2021 “Facebook Files,” a series of investigative reports that revealed Facebook’s internal knowledge of the harm caused by its algorithms. The documents detailed how the platform contributed to political polarization, amplified violent rhetoric, and negatively impacted young users’ mental health. Sorkin isn’t looking back nostalgically, this is about what came after the creation story.

Sorkin, who won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the original film, has long expressed interest in revisiting the subject. In a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “I think what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling, and there is a way to tell it as a follow up to The Social Network, and that’s as much as I know”
At this stage, there’s no confirmation on casting. Jesse Eisenberg, who played Zuckerberg in the original film, has not been announced as returning, though it would be hard to imagine a sequel without him. Deadline also reports that several roles have already been cast as Sorkin begins assembling a new cast. The scale of the project suggests it will be a major awards season contender when it finally lands.

Unlike most sequels, The Social Network Part II isn’t trying to pick up where the story left off. It’s not a continuation of character arcs, it’s a follow-up to the impact. This is less about college dorm drama and more about global influence, unchecked power, and the consequences of creating a virtual town square with no rules.
Sorkin’s return to the tech world comes at a time when Silicon Valley is under more scrutiny than ever. And with Sony backing the project, it’s clear they’re betting on lightning striking twice.
