Alien: Romulus will bring the terror back with practical effects and a slow-burn story structure reminiscent of Aliens according to director Fede Álvarez. He is dedicated to honoring the legacy of the original Alien films while breathing new life into the franchise with fresh characters and innovative storytelling.
In the next chapter, a crew of space explorers embarks on a perilous journey to a distant planet. There, they encounter deadly xenomorphs and uncover horrifying secrets that threaten their survival. With a blend of old-school practical effects and a re-introduction of the franchises suspenseful tone, Alien: Romulus promises to deliver a chilling experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.
With the film’s release just over two weeks away, director Fede Álvarez shared insights about his approach in an interview with Collider. He revealed that the story structure of the new film draws inspiration from James Cameron’s sequel, Aliens. Álvarez spoke about the slow-burn narrative designed to engage viewers, allowing them to form attachments to the characters before witnessing their harrowing fates.
I think that audiences definitely want a lot more from the stories, and I think we have enough time here because it’s quite a slow burn. The structure is very similar to Aliens in a way, which really takes a while to really get to the horror. But I think by the time you get there, you’re invested in those characters, you want them to succeed, and that’s what makes it so heartbreaking when, unfortunately, probably some of them, a lot of them will find terrible endings.

Fede Álvarez reveals his favorite thing about ‘Alien: Romulus’
While Alien: Romulus does utilize CGI, Álvarez knows the importance of incorporating practical effects to effectively terrify audiences with the iconic Xenomorphs. Blending these old-school techniques with modern technology will create a more immersive and frightening experience for viewers. So unsurprisingly, Álvarez revealed to Collider that the moment he was most excited about involved a Chestburster scene.
I think one of my favorites, because it’s all pure old-school puppeteering, is a Chestburster. That was just a joy to see happening. The complexity of it is nine people puppeteering that thing. It takes so much time and love and effort to do it right, but I’m super proud of that scene.

As anticipation builds for the re-launch of the classic franchise, especially following the disappointment of Alien: Covenant, the potential of Alien: Romulus is significant. If it meets expectations, Romulus could mark the beginning of a new era of Alien films, reviving the franchise for a new generation of fans.
Alien: Romulus will be in cinemas worldwide August 16.
