It has been a long time coming since the first announcement that the video game series Borderlands would be receiving a film adaptation. After yesterday’s reveal of first-look still images and a poster, Lionsgate has finally released the trailer.
The Borderlands series is a popular franchise known for its looter-shooter gameplay and role-playing elements. Set in the distant future on the planet Pandora, the games follow a group of Vault Hunters as they search for valuable alien artifacts hidden in mysterious vaults. And it features open-world environments filled with hostile creatures and bandits.
In the upcoming film adaptation, the action will also unfold on the fictional planet of Pandora. Fans can expect to encounter familiar faces from the franchise, such as the iconic character Lilith, portrayed by the talented Cate Blanchett.
The red-headed outlaw, Lilith is described as an “infamous outlaw with a mysterious past.” She joins forces with a diverse team of unlikely heroes on a daring mission to locate the missing daughter of Atlas. And “The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other,” says a synopsis for the film.
In an interview with IGN, Director Eli Roth and Gearbox Entertainment founder Randy Pitchford, who is also serving as an executive producer, shed light on the project. Revealing that Roth was granted extensive creative freedom on the project, with Pitchford acting as a valuable resource for deeper insights into the franchise.
Roth explains: “Obviously, it’s Randy’s baby, it’s his brainchild, and it’s everybody’s brainchild,” Roth said. “You’re stepping into a world that is so beloved and the fans are so hardcore that you think, ‘Okay, well, I really don’t want to screw this up.’”
The film features a star-studded cast and alongside Blanchett, it features Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Kevin Hart as Roland, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Gina Gershon as Moxxi.
Directed and co-written by Eli Roth, Borderlands is expected in cinemas August 9.
